General fandom

While I don't have anything against writers who make these fics, I really don't like super serious and angsty fanfics for fandoms where the canon is generally humorous and comedic. They usually end up somewhat OOC and dismiss the funny side of the characters in favour of the drama. If I read the canon for a good laugh, then I'm not exactly looking to sniffle when I want to read more about my favourite characters. People can write what they want, I just get a bit baffled whenever I find myself reading a fic like that, especially if it's not how I think the characters would react to such tragic situations.

+1. The only Recess fanfiction I came across had the main plot be the fact that the gang accidentally murdered a girl in an arson in 4th grade and hated each other seven years later, what the fuck.

Oh my God. What the fuck indeed.

Besides, they're not the Pretty Little Liars gang or the kids from I Know What You Did Last Summer, Gretchen would turn on the other five on a dime. She would feel morally obligated to turn them in.

Wow. Seriously though. That's so dark. And that show is so cute. If anything, The Ashleys are the group I'd suspect of hiding an accidental murder for 7 years.

lol

for a minute I thought it would be a spoofy kind of fic, almost like "oops! we messed up! hahah"---something a la "Vexed". That would be pretty funny.

Although I could imagine it being something that happened one summer while they're in middle school or about to finish middle school. But they never talk about it after that. Vince would go on, get a scholarship to play ball in a private high school and college. Gretchen's moral compass is damaged, because she does not want to lose her friends, so she buries herself in various academic projects. Gus fears his father might find out somehow, and begins to ride the line between incredibly aggressive (as he was in that one episode he turned into a bully?)and hiding the feeling of falling apart. They all carry on, but it's killing all of them inside. And none of it comes out until Miss Finster dies, and they all head back home for the funeral. And for some reason or another, Spinelli had been home before Muriel's death, and confides in her/has a breakdown while Miss Finster is approaching her deathbed.

Randall, who at this point has become a lawyer, or a cop, desperate to make a break in his career, and never fully trusting of the gang, begins to snoop and discovers something that could promote his current standing in his job. Will the gang reunite? Or is it every kid for themselves? This isn't Third Street Elementary anymore.

And so, with brief comedic interludes, we, the readers, follow the gang one more time--young adults with an awful secret--as they try to navigate through the waves of the one mistake they made one summer's day, when they still could not imagine the repercussions of a simple prank.

I remember first coming upon the Psych fandom & finding so many dark fics and, like you said, I was just utterly baffled.

And again, people can write what they want & the show is about solving murders, but the tone of the show itself is so...not any of that.

And I'm in the opposite camp, where I love a series that has a ton of dark and fucked-up content and want to see fic that expands on those themes. But all people seem to want to write is fluffy AUs and sometimes crack humor. Which is all well and good, but there's basically no darkfic for a dark series. There should be both.

Yes. This. Good.
