Fandom in general

I think fic readers are entitled.

Especially after the secrets yesterday, but I've felt this for a long time

Just because it's put on the internet doesn't make it "all about pleasing you". Yes, people put their fic up for anyone who might enjoy it. But ffs quit acting like it's something you're owed.

If fanfic is a community it should be one that works both ways and not just to the favor of the people who read it. If someone is going to take your favorite fic down? Sorry that sucks, but don't act like you're being horribly mistreated or misused.

Being a fic writer yourself does not mean you get to tell other people what they ought to do with their fics. It's one thing to say "I could never do that" (good for you then), but it's another to say "I could never do that and you shouldn't either".

Person posted a ship you don't like? If they warned for it, well sorry get the fuck over it. Don't whine in reviews about how this ship is TOTES better.

Someone stopped writing a fic you like to work on something you don't care about? Well that's the way it is. It's incredibly selfish to act like a fic writer exists for your whims. It's especially shitty to mock them for their new interest and try to discourage them.

Just quit taking fic writers for granted and acting like they've signed a contract to cater to you on top of everything else by posting something online.

And if you honestly believe that fic writers do owe the "community" their fanfic forever and ever regardless of how they feel about their fic? Please don't ever talk about anybody else's "selfishness" , cause you've got a lot of your own to work out.

+1 I understand it sucks when a fic writer leaves and it especially sucks if they take all their work with them, but they don't owe anyone anything.

Fandom loses stuff all the time anyway, like nothing is forever especially if it's put online and no one saves it. Webhosts go down, people's personal computers explode, shit happens.

Part of creating your own work, and yes this includes fanwork, means having control over what is done with it. I don't understand people who think they have the right to tell ANYONE what they can do with their own work.

And the person/people who was saying that the "community" is SO important seemed to be constantly ignoring the question of someone's personal well being. Like how is someone supposed to keep up fanfic if their job is at stake? Do they expect someone to keep up fanfic and starve to death for it? And yes, losing your job over fanwork can happen, I've seen it happen in relation to porn.

They don't seem to care about the writer's well being, or they tell themselves that the fic being up couldn't possibly jeopardize the author in any way. Or "taking a stand for fanfiction" is more important than a job.

Or it's just all about how the act made them FEEL~ and thus it's a horrible shit thing to do, how dare they.

nayrt - Yup. There's at least one person on here who thinks that their feelings trump everyone's right to control their own writing. I don't see this as being any different from complaining that an author is wrong and horrible because writing A/B pairing instead of C/D pairing makes the reader feel bad and deprives the fandom of C/D fics. So much entitlement it's scary.

I agree. I think people use the whole "fandom is a COMMUNITY" as an excuse to act like they have a say in how other people choose to participate in fandom. Oh, you wrote a cool fic? Well, fandom is a COMMUNITY so it's ours now and if you decide to take it down for any reason you're telling your fans to fuck off, and how dare you do that! Because COMMUNITY.

Omg, did you really have to rehash it? Blah, blah, blah, we've already had this argument. Let it die already.
