Re: What is the most sheltered thing you've ever heard someone say?

My cousin is a sweet, smart, but naive woman of 28. A few months ago, she got married, moved out of her parents' house for the first time, and moved into the house she and her new husband had just bought. She called my aunt a few weeks later, wondering why she had received an electric bill in the mail. She literally did not realize that she had to pay for her electricity usage. She thought she'd bought the house and all utilities were included. *sigh*

Did her husband also think it would automatically be paid for?

I don't know. He lived on his own previously, so I wouldn't think so. The electric bill was the first one that came in the mail, so I think she just kinda freaked out and called her mom first thing.

I feel like at that point it's kind of bad parenting.

This. If your child has reached the age of 28 without understanding the concept of bills for electricity usage, you haven't done a stellar parenting job.

I dunno. I don't remember my parents ever explicitly mentioning electricity/hydro bills (or property taxes or land transfer fees etc) but it does get mentioned in media (TV/movies) and games (Monopoly) so it's still something that I find weird that people wouldn't know about...

I think that's a totally understandable response, but my aunt and uncle are really great parents. They have another daughter who is probably the most well-adjusted person in my entire family. My cousin just has some social anxiety and other issues going on, together with a severe case of being scatterbrained. She's also a part of an extremely conservative religious sect (unlike anyone else in her family), and she mostly dedicated her adult life to being a good candidate for a pastor's wife and raising babies. Her wedding was a nightmare to plan, because she's a "big picture" person that wanted to handle it herself, but she lacked the attention to any detail required for a wedding. Lots of last minute crises on that front.

I should say that she is probably the most generous, big-hearted, loving person I've ever known in my life. (We are *very* different people, haha.) A person as good as her has to have some flaws though!
