I'm pretty sure there aren't any male Gems, apart from Steven.

I've been interested in watching this show for a while now but every time I sit down to watch it I get, well, "turned off" by the art. Years of watching anime, I guess. >.>

I started watching it and didn't like it. But I needed something to have on while I was painting my nails and at some point during that, it hooked me. So I guess I'm suggesting give it only partial attention for a while and hope it hooks you. If it does, it's a pretty interesting ride. If it doesn't, you tried.

Watch it for the anime references! I love how blatantly some shots echo Utena.

Why, though? It's been made pretty clear that apart from Steven the gems are a sexless race.

Technically Gems are agender. They all present as female, except Steven, because he's half-human and also genetically has a human sex and gender. The "presenting as female" thing appears to be part of their overall characteristics that probably happens not as a result of human gender being a thing - after all gems are pretty old and didn't encounter humanity until they already had a galactic empire.

They had to have seen humanoids somewhere. I am certain that there was a progenitor race that created them. From that race came the humanoid female shape.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
They don't have to have seen humanoids thy look like Earth humans before coming to Earth. There's really no precedent for a third sentient race in the show at all

That's an interesting headcanon, but it's a headcanon. They are canon agender.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
They've made it clear all the gems except for Steven present as female/use female pronouns (and don't have a human concept of gender or sex.)

Also I think another male gem would weaken the otherness of Steven - recent episodes have been highlighting that Steven feels a disconnect from both humans and gems and I think that plays into it.

This is a really good point, and I agree!

Seems unlikely at this point.

And to be honest I really like the idea of their species only having one gender or being genderless. It makes them seem more alien like.

All the times I see alien species in tv/movies and they have men and women I just kind of roll my eyes and think "they're aliens, they don't have to be like us."

Fandom for this show is a little... intense... but I think on this one you're just going to get a lot of people telling you what you probably already know. Unless a Steven-fusion identifies as male, it's not going to happen because all the Homeworld Gems are technically agender but use female pronouns. Steven is fated to be the Smurfette of Gemkind.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Unless he reproduces, maybe? (I'm thinking some kind of flash-forward story where he's an adult). Even then it's 50-50 at best, and that's assuming a) he's not sterile and b) his Gem qualities don't skew the ratios of X and Y chromosomes he produces.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 11:33 am (UTC)(link)
Well, based on history, that doesn't give you more gems, just different ones.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Is there any particular reason why or is it just a general desire. I know this might sound like I'm trying to pick a fight with you or accuse you of being ~*problematic*~, but I'm honestly curious.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
*general desire?

Ugh fuck typing on mobile.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think it could be interesting if they had a gem who presented as female and all that but was voiced by a male actor and not have it just played for laughs.

That could be interesting.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
In theory, that's a great idea.

In practice, it would only serve to whip the fandom into the a frenzy over trans headcanons and the validity thereof.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Gems can't be transgender. If one wants to present as male, they can do so. The Grand are female by choice. (But I want to know why they choose that and why they choose to present as humanoid anything.)

Well, there's Ruby!

No, seriously, I think that's OK.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, can't have those not-as-feminine gems be considered women.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'll admit I really really love that they're all female, and that's not an issue. They don't hate men, they don't envy men, there's no Big Political Statement on how their world doesn't have men and that's A Big Deal.

It just does. They don't have them. They're all ladies. No one questions it in the show. There's no big reason, no rule, no law, nothing to explain.

And so I think having male gems would take away from that because suddenly of course it's not a big deal, it's a 'normal' alien race just like humans.

But it's like... I haven't seen the show, but I saw a clip of Young Justice where they're explaining why this mission has to be all girls and the reasons it has to be all girls and so they put together an all-girl team and one of the characters point out "Would you bother justifying it if it was an all-guy team or would they just be normal?"

I like that it's the same level of normal for all the gems to be female and no one points it out.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
This. Yes. I know a lot of shows that try to do the 'look here is a woman doing unwoman things but it's [current year] so what's wrong with you for thinking it's weird' trope are trying to be positive about it. But I like it a lot better when women can fight and be cool and nobody, not even asshole characters, thinks twice about that.
