(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)Who says you have to "think up witty responses"? You write "Thank you." It's basic courtesy. (The people who piss and moan about "inflation" of comment counts are idiots.)

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 01:27 am (UTC)(link)If anon had said those were some possible reasons for not answering it'd be different, but... eh, anon sounds rather entitled and far more petty than OP.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 03:45 am (UTC)(link)You're a fucktard. That's it.
How the fuck is the author "entitled"? Learn what that words means, dipshit.
If someone creates something for someone else, something that person enjoyed, apparently it's "entitlement" to want thanks in turn. To want acknowlegement. Yeah, okay, that's fucking bullshit.
Op is a dick and you're a dick. You should meet and marry each other so you can raise a huge family of dicks.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 01:41 am (UTC)(link)Authors have lives. While you're reading all those fics they're working, they're raising kids, they're going to school, they're running errands, etc. I would rather an author work on a piece during their free time than waste it responding to my reviews, which I will leave because I'm a decent human being who says 'thank you' when given a gift.
There's an author on FFN who's currently writing this amazing HP Fic and s/he gets a crazy amount of reviews per chapter. I'm talking 20-50+. She admitted a while back that she was struggling to get back to everyone who commented and a ton of people sent her messages that basically said 'don't worry about us & focus on the fic'. S/he doesn't respond to reviews anymore unless someone asks her a question but she always thanks us in her a/n's.
I think you're really selfish. Authors don't owe you anything but you sure as heck owe them for writing that story you enjoyed. They didn't have to publish it, didn't have to share it, but they did.
God, you're such an entitled snowflake.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 02:06 am (UTC)(link)And anyways, if readers are sending kudos (something they DON'T HAVE TO DO), why y'all get so butthurt by those same readers not commenting?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 04:35 am (UTC)(link)"Good morning, neighbor, your garden is nice."
HOW DARE THEM TO TALK AS IF THEY EXPECT AN ANSWER FROM ME! THEY AREN'T ENTITLED TO ONE AND IF THEY'RE GOING TO LOOK AT MY PUBLIC GARDEN I WORKED SO HARD ON, THEY SHOULD TALK TO ME PROPERLY AND THANK ME FOREVER FOR ALLOWING THEM TO LOOK AT IT!
WHAT, THEY AREN'T SAYING ME ANYTHING ANYMORE? HOW PETTY!
LOGIC FAIL
(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)And your logic fails. This one is more appropriate:
Say I'm a gardener and you're my neighbor. I go into your garden and make it look beautiful. You thank me. I don't thank you back for thanking me, not with words; instead, I return to your garden and keep working on it so that every time you come back something has been added it to make it more beautiful.
According to you, I'm in the wrong for not explicitly saying thank you. It doesnt matter that I keep coming back to beautify your garden, doesn't matter how much effort I put into doing so or how long it takes me. I never verbally thank you for thanking me, so I don't deserve your thanks or praise. You're just going to be petty and remain silent, all the while reaping the rewards of my efforts.
Yeah, screw you.
Re: LOGIC FAIL
(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)It's not my garden, it's a public garden anyone can look and no one has to stop to look it and thank you for doing something you wanted to do.
If you want to do it, that's fine; if I want to let you know personally that I do appreciate what you do, that's fine too; if your answer to that is silence... well, I already told you what I thought and you obviously didn't care so that's the end, no point in speaking to you again.
Re: LOGIC FAIL
(Anonymous) 2016-02-05 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)A gardener tends to a public garden, as this garden was made and put out for the masses to see, not just one person. Someone says to the gardener "I love your work, it's so beautiful!" and the gardener can either respond with "thanks" or completely ignore the person. If someone ignored my comment on the flowers I'm less likely to comment again because it feel like the gardener doesn't want to hear my comments.
People who comment of fics usually aren't saying "thank you" to the author, they're commenting on how much they liked the work. No one expects someone to respond to "thank you" with "thank you", that's stupid.
Honestly though, I don't expect the author to reply to every little thing if they don't want to/don't have time, but they shouldn't expect others to put in the effort if they won't do it themselves. Even just a short note at the start of a new chapter saying something along the lines of "thank you for all the comments/feedback, I really appreciate it!" would be nice. It acknowledges that people are commenting and the author appreciates it. It's low effort too as it's just one reply. If you can't be fucked doing that, then don't expect more from the people reading your works.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 01:43 am (UTC)(link)Not every author is as desperate as you for validation and an inflated comment count.

maybe it takes OP longer to check if an author generally doesn't comment than it would take to make the comment. in that case it would be a bit petty.
or maybe they just look if the author have replied to any comments as they scroll down. in that case they still kudos, so they still get appreciation *shrug*
