Ugh. Whenever I see a fic with lots of comments I get excited to see the discussion and maybe some of the authors insight, but I only ever find it's just 20+ comments of "Pls continue" and "Thanks for reading!"

I don't think authors should reply to every brief three word comment. It's really unnecessary and just comment inflating at that point.
