First off, I find the idea that pro authors shouldn't ever talk about their own work incredibly stupid.

Second, fanfic writers are very different from pro writers in the level of contact they have with their readers. Fanfic writers are part of the same community and probably know a lot of their readers on some level.

Tacky to reply to comments? No, that's bullshit, it's not tacky. it's tacky to throw a tantrum if you get a negative review, sure, but it's never tacky to say "Glad you liked it, thanks so much for commenting." I think that's good manners. Not required, but it's nice and it makes me think more highly of the author if they make an effort.
