Is this for Real

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-02-03 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
So according to a Tumblr Post, a MRA group is hosting gathering all over the world tomorrow to protest the existence of rape laws. Is this for real? The archive post they linked to makes it just sound like a general MRA meeting, and I'm not willing to go to the actual site and give them more traffic.

That looks like a generic meetup post.

I'm not sure that I'd trust the Tumblr grapevine to not have dramatized whatever it is.

I think Snopes posted about this today.

They've skewed the details but not by much. It's not a protest against rape laws, it's PUAs meeting up to discuss their rapey ideology under their rapelord Roosh.

SA If you're not aware of who Roosh is, he's the founder/owner of Return of Kings and also the guy who said that rape on private property should be legal to show women they should be more careful. When people were rightfully outraged, he claimed it was satire. He apparently doesn't know that the point of satire isn't just to post your own deeply-held views.

Re: Is this for Real

I actually wanted to mention that, because I read the piece in question, and even under the most charitable, satirical reading, it's almost impossible for me not to see it as a defense of rape.

Like, even if you set aside the specific proposal for legalizing rape, what's the point of the piece? Presumably, as a criticism of the idea of 'rape culture' as a concept. But, like... his specific objection to the concept seems to be that it's women's responsibility not to get raped, and that rape is easily prevented in the majority of cases. Which is more or less the same point that he was driving at when he proposed making rape legal. So... even if you take him as being satirical about the thing about making it legal, he still holds all the beliefs that lead up to that argument? Which are just as objectionable?

And it's just so confusing to me because, like, this is literally what the piece textually says! Explicitly! Saying that it's fine because it's satirical is just a mind-boggling amount of evil, lunatic nonsense to me. It is just so blatantly untrue.

It's not explicitly a "make rape legal" event, though RoK has advocated for that in the past.

Everyone involved in this or any other part of the so-called "manosphere" is at once tremendously upsetting and yet crushingly dull, and I view them as something less than human.

Thank you. It's sometimes hard for me to reassure myself that most men aren't like this. Don't think rape is okay. Don't think women's rights somehow detract from their rights. Sometimes the world world feels like it's set up just to justify sexual abuse.

I'm tired of fighting against this stuff. Tired of fighting for things that shouldn't even have to be fought for, like the right to be considered more than something to fuck. I'm just tired.

Oh, what melodrama. I'm a woman, I actually leave the house and don't spend all my time on tumblr, and I've never met a man in my life who thinks rape is okay. I suggest you meet some actual people with XY chromosomes and stop the woe-is-me pity party, you'll be a happier person for it.

I am SHOCKED that tumblr got something wrong.

Next you will tell me masturbation booths are not real.

any booth is a masturbation booth

if you believe in yourself

Re: Is this for Real

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, it's not really all that wrong. it is a meet-up, and it is of a group that advocates those things.

Re: Is this for Real

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
It is a bunch of MRAs meeting up to chat generally. However, as far as I can tell, the person organizing it is more or less genuinely pro-rape.

Re: Is this for Real

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
What the actual fucking hell???!!!

PUAs are not MRAs. MRAs are not PUAs

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
There can be some overlap, but generally the MRAs consider PUAs one rung down on the horrible-fucking-people ladder than them.

And in general PUAs consider MRAs to be stupid overly emotional cucks who waste time trying to be seen as good or valuable men by women, when how women see you doesn't matter because women are just holes to fuck.

Also, there's not really a point to the meetups, they're not plotting the downfall of women. it's a "Let's meet other people who think like me" thing.

I'm not saying that I would consider it a huge tragedy if there were some well placed explosives littered around key points in the world today, but I think tumblr might be going a little tin-hat with the "They're meeting to destroy women schtick" and a little click baity with the MRAs. The only mens rights PUA's care about are their rights to smash pussy.

and they're the ones that think rape is fine?

Re: PUAs are not MRAs. MRAs are not PUAs

Well, I'm sketchy about labelling an entire group by it's worst members, but one of their big name guys, the guy who quite literally wrote the book that started the movement, seems to think something very close to "Rape shouldn't be a crime". Look up Roosh.

Their general philosophy seems to be something along the lines of "The measure of a man is in how many women he can get to sleep with him. All that matters in the true mans life is getting laid, and the true man should allow nothing to stop him from getting at that vagina." That's the most charitable interpretation I have of them. More often than not, the impression I and many others get from them is that their philosophy is "Human sexuality is sport and women are stupid and worthless and don't deserve to win, so we'll fuck them all to put them in their place". I admit I may be being harsher on the group that they deserve, and I concede it's possible that they're better people than I'm giving them credit for, but my limited experience makes me think I'd rather not put the work in to find out.

As you can see their "Real men do X" idea puts them kinda at odds with MRA's more often than not and makes MRA's feel justified shitting on them. Where as the PUA's think MRA's crying about their rights and bloo-a-bloo etc instead of crushing pussy etc makes them not real men and worthy of derision. The word Beta get's thrown around.

all those rape talk we have here, are some of these people, them?.....

Re: Is this for Real

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-02-03 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, seconding the other anon... that guy is a PUA. Now, I'm not saying they don't operate on some of the same rhetoric, but they're not remotely the same species.

Think ...guy at a club wearing a gold chain and a purple fedora trying to talk to as many girls as possible vs. guy sitting at home in front of a computer trying to rant about how men are marginalized because divorce laws are unequal (and also probably doesn't know how divorce laws work).

Guy 1 is the PUA. Guy 2 is the MRA.
