(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 06:01 am (UTC)(link)Just because I enjoy writing doesn’t mean I don’t put insane quantities of effort into it, or that I don’t stress over it, or get anxious over it, or reach points where I just want to rip my hair out and give up writing altogether. And yet I continue to write, not only because I love it, but because I have a lot of amazing fans who I don’t want to disappoint, and because I love the feeling of accomplishment that comes when I update a fic and post a new story, and because I delight in receiving reviews.
So even when a fic is driving me barmy I continue to work on it because I love my fandom(s) and my readers(s). It doesn’t always work out, but I try.
This whole “well, it’s just fanfiction so it’s not as if it’s important” thing is frustrating as heck to have to hear. Maybe it’s not important to you but it’s important to me and it’s important to at least some of my readers.
And you’re right. It is just a hobby. Which should give people more incentive to review and drop kudos since we aren’t making a profit from it, but apparently not, apparently that just makes fanfiction authors less deserving of holding anyone's regard or receiving praise. I can only speak for myself, but I write fic as much for me as I do the fandom and probably wouldn't enjoy it as much if I published it to the Web and received no feedback.
