I absolutely respond to every comment I get.

I feel like it's a load of crap, the whole 'inflating the comment count'. To me, I want interaction, you can't interact if you don't reply.

and, OP, I am definitely less likely to leave a comment on a continuing fic where the author doesn't reply. I do still try and leave comments, because I think that it's important to do that (I mean, I love comments!), but I will comment/interact a lot more when an author does.
