All those opinions about inflating the comment count - I'm honestly surprised. I thought people were generally sorting/searching either by Kudos, by hit count or by word count.

Anyway, I comment and I love getting comments. Not that I get that many, but that kinda makes them even more precious to me? So yeah, I reply in return.

I sort by comments first, then bookmarks, then kudos. I never sort by hits--hits don't mean anything to me except that a lot of people visited the fic. If a fic has a lot of hits but little to no comments or kudos I'll probably skip past it, tbh (the exception being tiny fandoms and older fandoms that were popular before AO3 was a thing).

I used to sort by comments, then bookmarks, too. But my dwircle and the fannish people I know in analogue life kept repeating "Kudos is the new fandom currency, if you want a good search result, you should sort by Kudos" and saying things like "I don't leave comments any more at all, I only leave Kudos" - so yeah, it kinda stuck with me?

Oh, and hits - I don't give a damn about hit counts, have disabled them for me on AO3. But with that AO3 meme going round all the time, where people rank their fics by hit count, etc, I assumed people did indeed give a damn. *g*
