Medical thread

I have a question and I figure someone else might too.

TMI period question

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
So I've been taking birth control for years. All of a sudden something seems off. I'm on the same pill. Nothing has changed. But I'm currently going through my third period in two months.

This would be the sort of development that your doctor would need to hear about ASAP.

This...it might not eve be your pill, there might be an underlying medical problem.

My doctor does know that I've been having it more frequently. I saw a gynecologist two weeks ago who diagnosed me with endometriosis. I'll be having the surgery soon. She didn't want to change up my pill until the diagnosis was confirmed. I'm just not really sure what to do in the meantime because at the moment it is really interfering with my life.

might be stress. Ask your doctor if you can.

Have you started taking an SSRI or anything like that? Because those can throw your menstrual cycle out of whack even if you're on the pill.

Uh, well, I'm the person above who hasn't taken my Prozac in 5 years or so. Except I did take it for all of two days a month or so ago, but the taste made me throw up so I didn't keep at it. I didn't realize this was a thing.

It definitely can be. I'd taken Zoloft for years, but never while I was on the pill. I recently had to start it again (I'm on the pill now), and boom, suddenly I was having breakthrough bleeding that I'd never had before. When I asked my psychiatrist about it, she said that SSRIs can indeed cause menstrual changes because of how they work on dopamine, which then influences hormones.

The same thing happened to me. My doc said my body just got used to my pill, and as soon as he put me on another one, I was totally fine! But definitely ask your doc first!

Talk to your doctor.

Ask your doctor about it, more sooner than later. It could be a sign something's really wrong.

Birth Control question

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-02-06 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Since the thread is here. Is it a bad idea to skip the placebo week of my birth control pills? I don't have time to deal with having my period between now and the bar, and I'm hoping if I skip the placebo pills I can avoid it.

Re: Birth Control question

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
I've done that before when I was on birth control and going on vacation so I didn't want my period to happen. As long as you've got enough pills to last you, it should be fine.

Should I just skip the placebos, or should I take them for the iron and take the regular ones too?

They're basically just sugar pills. They're only there to remind you to take the other three weeks out of the month.

I have the kind that has iron in it, and my iron is often on the low side so I figured it couldn't hurt to take on of the placebos with one of the regular.

I do it all of the time. It should be fine.
