It boggles my mind that people care enough about hockey to write RPF of it. Is the whole fandom compromised of Canadians or something?

Some of the teams actually create fun videos with the players and give them a narrative so to speak. One of the major issues with the Blackhawks narrative is that they always made Kane out to be a "Frat Boy" opposite Jonathan Toews' "Captain Serious". Now, everyone expects Kane to be a drunk, abusive kid who never grew up, but it's not actually the truth. It's sad that the PR team didn't do better at either correcting the stories or letting the narrative evolve to show the adult hockey-stats-nerd Kane.

I love hockey, but hockey RPF is the creepiest form of RPF I've come across, tbh.

I'm curious how you feel it's different from other RPFs? Hockey players (and other sports figures) have a public persona the same way that other famous people do.

Not really? For example, K-pop idol RPF is slightly less creepy because of how fake idols always are, RPF of long-dead famous people is less creepy because they/their immediate family isn't around to see it.

Hockey players don't really have a public persona, though? They're just being slightly censored versions of themselves. They're just athletes, a career where being in the spotlight is incidental; some of them are so private they don't even like to do after-game interviews, many have wives and kids. I also personally know some NHL players, which ups the creep-factor for me by a lot. They're just normal people playing a sport they love.

AYRT

I do think that some of them - a lot of the more popular RPF fic pairings - do have a public persona. It depends on how much their team PR has put forth a public image. I mostly follow the Blackhawks, which has definitely created a narrative around select members (Kane, Toews, Shaw, Panarin - previously Sharp...) of the team that doesn't necessarily align with some of the more private things that have been leaked about them over the years.

I honestly don't really feel like they do. Hockey players are a lot more subdued than say, NFL players. And this is coming from a hockey fan.
