Re: Characters falling in love
So that's one option, putting your characters through the type of situation that means they can't really have a healthy relationship with someone else. While this by all means does not go for all vets, I've heard a LOT of vets and wives/husbands of vets talk about not being able to cope with PTSD/their partner's PTSD upon coming home from a war zone. Civilians can't understand (logically, maybe, but not on the gut-deep emotional level), and sometimes their attempts to help make things worse. Never mind that the vet often comes home changed and not always recognizably the same person... it's heavy stuff. It's part of why you'll sometimes see married servicemembers... because they get it.
So for a three day romance? I'd put them through hell and back. I'm having trouble thinking of other ways to make it realistic, unless you're writing a romance and want to handwave it. Even then, some readers will point out it's not realistic. The "love at first sight" trope has fallen out of favor.
