If such stories explored the ambivalence pregnant women feel I'd take them more seriously. How terrifying it is to worry for nine months whether you'll be able to manage the pain, whether your child will be healthy, whether your relationship with your SO will survive it, whether you will be a good mother or not. Since they don't. *shrug*

I'm working on an MPreg fic, and it'll deal with all that sort of stuff. It kind of boggles me how people write all this stuff where the damn thing is centered around all that magical mummy glow baby bump ultrasound fluff, and it ends with the pretty baby getting born. And, of course, Mr Mum is more maternal and peaceful and housewifey than any woman I have ever met.

No. Yes, my fic will have fluff, and basically, it'll be happy. But it will also take into consideration the fact that settling down and raising a family really aren't on the agenda for the kinda-lucky couple AT ALL. They often behave like their combined age is about 30; really not great candidates for parenthood. And they have plenty of arguments. And Mr Mum really isn't enthused about taking it easy. And he's terrified of surgery, because his past experiences have been uniformly horrific, so having to get a C-section...

I ain't writing schmoop. I'm writing a fic where the characters are stressed and alarmed and worried and scared out of their minds and kinda embarrassed really, but it's just not all bad.
