I always thought Utena was a total douchebag - she was always on her moral superiority high horse, making judgement calls about the other characters in the show. Her trying to change Anthy, treating her like some kind of cause for her naive prince ideals - all of which basically revolved around her ego - without actually ever trying to understand Anthy? Egh.

And then there's her massive state of denial about Akio and Akio/Anthy's relationship. Utena may have had good intentions, but the level of self-delusion she was under drives me up the wall. She didn't really shape up until near the end of the show - at around the same time as Anthy.

I rank her up there with Shiori on the douchebag scale - Juri was totally right about that one, IMHO (though she thought of it rather a different way, heh)

I totally agree, but in the end, she made it worth it. That is what mattered to me, she grew up. Not many did (Anthy grew up too). I've always thought Ruka was a nice balance between Utena's naïve, egocentric ideals and Akio's manipulation skillz/doucheprince, only he was actually selfless all the time (for the object of his affection). He came out intelligent, savior like but manipulative and deceptive, in the end his intentions were ubergood and he was tragic.

Oh yes, in the end Utena came out of it as an adult - I love her by the end of the show.

I first saw Utena totally out of sequence and I've watched it about... five times since then STFU it's my favourite show evar, but each time my impression of the characters changes. Ruka is a character that took me many watches to get, but now he's one of my favourites. <3
