But...people take off their socks? Like I understand if it's in detail by someone with a foot/sock fetish, but what do you do in real life when people take off socks?

People do a lot of stuff in real life that doesn't get described in fanfic, though. OP didn't say that socks disgusted them IRL.

My sister is disgusted by socks and feet IRL, and it's the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. I do not understand it. It's not even about being unsanitary because she is not disgusted by shoes, which are dirtier than socks.

Socks are comfy and cute feet warmers. Please.
