advice needed

I'm job hunting and I found a company I'd really like to work for. Its mission very much lines up with the sort of work I'd like to do - except they don't have any specific positions listed. Instead, the website just says "e-mail to inquire about possible job openings". I'm willing to do a pretty wide range of things, but being straight out of academia I'm not specifically trained to do one thing or one type of job. Is it bad to send an inquiry e-mail, giving a little background about my studies and attach my resume, and ask about job opportunities without specifically indicating what it is I'd like to do? Or does that make me seem really flaky and sound like I'm wasting their time?

No, it isn't. The worst thing they can say is no. The worst thing you can do is not take a chance.

Seconding this. They've already opened the door for you here.

Thanks, I went ahead and sent a job inquiry e-mail. I hate how much I overthink this stuff, but I've been pretty unsuccessful on my job hunt so far so have convinced myself I'm doing something wrong!
