It is ok

Is it ok to use the word "Jewess"?

To describe a homosexual Jewish male?

Trolling aside, I am actually curious if Jewess is a legit word that just isn't used any more because it's archaic, or if it's a slur that's not used because it's a horrible word.

No its not a slur. Unless you do use it against a male to imply he isn't masculine for any reason.

Actually, it is a slur.

It is... I don't know about a slur, but it's very archaic and has strange connotations to me such that I would immediately hardcore side-eye someone who used it.

I'd be a little taken aback by anyone who used this in general, like anon above me said it's not exactly a slur I don't think but it's kind of...weird and I'd probably think the person had some iffy opinions about Jewish people, to say the least. And using a clearly feminine term for a male would make me think they were homophobic and misogynist.

lol no

It sounds like the sort of language you'd find on stormfront.

But I'm sure you wouldn't know anything about that, right, OP?

It's an archaic term for a cis Jewish woman, and should be used in no other way. It's a legit word, and not a slur in that context (it's perfectly alright to call Mirah in Daniel Deronda a Jewess because she does herself and everyone else does; it was the accepted term at the time). Yes, it will probably be taken as a slur or at least a slight to call a modern gay Jewish man that.

If you're writing something about a gay Jewish guy in the 19th century, I can understand people calling him that behind his back. He might even call himself that jokingly. But not today.

Any word to describe a follower of Judaism or their ethnic descendants is considered a slur, including Jew, by that group if it suits their purpose to do so.

It's not ok to call a gay man anything except what he wants to be called, and even then only if you're friendly about it.
