Re: Things you can't believe are considered "normal"

I would never buy a designer purse for a preteen, but I get the point of designer purses.

A purse is something that is highly visible and which you carry with you almost everywhere. Fashion-conscious women (and some men) also recognize designer purses more readily than most other forms of attire. So if ever it was worth spending money for a status symbol, a purse would be the item to do it on.

When I look at a woman's outfit, I most often have no idea where she got her top, or her jeans. I might recognize her shoes and her coat, but I probably wont. However, if she has a Marc Jacob's purse, or a Michael Kors purse, or Coach, or Ralph Lauren, or Dooney and Bourke, or even Calvin Klein - or (eeek!) a Prada or a Louis Vuitton - I'm going to recognize it right away, and it essentially elevates the rest of her style choices.

It's ridiculous, unless you look at fashion as both a hobby people enjoy, and a game with certain guidelines and techniques and ways to play a stronger game.
