Re: Things you can't believe are considered "normal"

Eh, I can believe milk is considered normal because eating meat is considered normal. It would be weird if it was normal to eat the flesh, but not drinks its milk.

Related, it's weird to me that certain parts of an animal are a-okay to eat, and others (in the country I live in, anyway) are not. If you're eating an animal, you're eating an animal.

This is why I can't take vegetarians who eat eggs seriously. An egg is still an animal, man. Either it's okay or it isn't.

An egg is not an animal. The eggs you eat are not fertilized.

Yep. I've never been able to get the "hen-period salad" line from "10-inch Hero" out of my head whenever the vegetarian-ness of eggs/egg salad is mentioned.

it's still a potential animal, though. i would think that people who are vegetarians for reasons of animal ethics would object to eating it both because it's something that could have been an animal and because it involves animals being kept in conditions that aren't always humane.

I'll agree with you on the inhumane conditions (I get mine from a friend who has her own chickens), but saying an egg should be protected because it could have been an animal is getting perilously close to Right to Life propaganda.

That doesn't make any sense.

Most vegetarians (non-vegans) who have their diet directly because of animals tend to oppose animals being slaughtered. No animal dies for milk or an egg. Now, you could argue that if the animal is still in a factory farm, it still has a miserable life whether you slaughter it or not, but there's still no animal death involved in an egg or milk so your argument here is pretty weird.

Vegans are the ones who want nothing to do with animals in their daily consumption.
