Re: Favorite tabletop games~!

I'mma c&p the rec list I made for kaijinscendre a few months ago:

Ermagerd all the gamez. I don't own all of these games; some are my friends', and most were introduced to me by my brother-in-law, who has an amazing collection. Many have been on Wil Wheaton's TableTop, so watch the shows for games you think are interesting! And if I just listed something and you wanna know more, just ask or message me. :)

Co-op games/Semi co-op games
•Pandemic, of course. When basic Pandemic starts getting a little dull, highly recommend the On the Brink expansion for more roles and options for play. I love the mutation scenario. There are more expansions; the only other one I have is In the Lab, which I wasn't that impressed by (although you can use its roles/action cards in any other type of Pandemic game) but people who have more of a scientific background really love In the Lab.
•Castle Panic
•Betrayal, as others have said. I've heard a lot about it and finally played for the first time at Halloween, it was great!
•Forbidden Desert. I liked this one quite a bit more than Forbidden Island, myself.
•Mysterium. Frequently described as Dixit-meets-Clue, a ghost uses cards with mysterious macabre artwork to represent dreams it's giving to a team of physics to provide clues as to who committed the crime that's making it haunt this house. Before you play Mysterium, you will want to research the various international editions! The US edition has rather different rules and revised art, but comes with a nice DM-style screen VERY helpful to the ghost player. The edition I've played most is the Ukrainian one (Містеріум) and recommend that.

Set-collection games
•Alhambra
•7 Wonders. Several of my friends love 7 Wonders. I am kinda bored with it. It doesn't get the highest marks for replayability from me.
•Thebes. Better than 7 Wonders, smh...
•Sheriff of Nottingham. Also has a bluffing element

Pick-up and delivery games
Mayfair Games crayon rail games. A classic series from the guys who made Catan; and an enduring favorite in this household going back to my childhood. Create a railroad across the country shipping products and people for profit! We have almost all of the versions listed on that link, although the best ones for introducing new players are EuroRails (Europe), Empire Builder (North America), and Russian Rails (with an added "fall of Communism" mechanic). Having grown up on these, things like Ticket to Ride are really unimpressive.
Manifest. This one's recent, from a small company based out of New Zealand. It's shipping-based (and not the kind fangirls are into), and set in the 1920s. Board and card design are gorgeous Art Deco style.

Card games / Tile-laying games
•Qwirkle. Tip: if you're not going to play with children (under 7 or so), I recommend travel Qwirkle, for being cheaper, more portable, playing on a smaller surface, and slightly more durable (hard plastic tiles over thick cards).
•Tsuro
•Gloom
•Sushi Go! Very fun and fast, and getting my own copy of it is now top of my list.
•Fluxx, and its variations. Star Fluxx and Pirate Fluxx are my favorites. Nothing's quite as funny as someone going through a large hand on "Play All" while trying to maintain a ridiculous pirate voice.
•Dixit. Wildly creative and imaginative. I discussed this before here with an anon that found Dixit's base game alone too repetitive after a while; I can see how that might happen, but the best way to allieviate that is with the expansions. The more cards the better, afaic.

Deception games
•The Resistance
•One Night Ultimate Werewolf (plays in 10 minutes, doesn't need a moderator, no player elimination in rounds). Or just the Werewolves of Miller's Hollow, similar but more complex.
•Spyfall. Good party game; best with 5-6 players but can suit up to 8.

Misc
•Ascension, a deck-building card game. Rec for who people like Magic Crack but don't want to spend every penny on Magic Crack. Quarriors is similar but with special dice, and more spendy on expansions. Ascension you can play just fine as a base game.
•Lords of Waterdeep, a worker-placement game, fantasy flavor. My current favorite game. Just gorgeous design as well. Has a great iOS app version, with good, challenging AIs.
•The Game of Thrones game. (Or, to share an inside joke, "The Game of Thrones game... of thrones!" etc. as recursively as possible.) Not the GoT card game. The strategy board game. This will take 3 hours to play the first time, and maybe the second. Do not be intimidated; it's fun if slow. Once all the players fully know the rules, it is totally possible to play in 90 minutes.
•Article 27: the UN Security Council Game (more fun than it sounds, really...)
Edited (edited to add Dixit because I remembered it wasn't on my list already because I had talked to kaijin about it earlier in her thread) 2016-02-07 03:23 (UTC)
