It's called planned obsolescence. I'm not sure I buy that you have to have the latest model though--my phone is a Huawei that debuted in 2011, and it functions adequately.

I personally don't always buy the latest model. I actually have kept phones past their due date but most I've had lose battery power eventually and the phone company will stop making "those type" of batteries if you go into the store. It's also impossible to get fixed if any issue occurs and by that time the upgrade is usually free (if you don't want THE latest thing in any case.)

My mother absolutely hates it because she doesn't want a smart phone and her cell phone is only for when they travel/emergencies so she does her best to try to keep phones as long as she can.
