"Yeah people would keep phones if they COULD."

But they can do that now. It's just that in order to do that, they'd have to sacrifice always having the latest bells and whistles that people now believe are necessary. If you simply get a phone that isn't an iPhone or a smartphone, there's no reason why you couldn't use it for years.

There are reasons you can't use it for years though, batteries only last so long and things in phones go bad. If your phone lasts, that's great! But not everyone's does. I try to make my phone last as long as possible but it's still more wasteful then having a landline phone which typically lasted for decades.

And I never go for the newest model but my job makes it necessary to have a smartphone, I delayed upgrading as long as I could but I would be in trouble if I didn't have one now.

Not to mention the fact that people can drop and break their phones...I did that to my Galaxy S4 when I was cleaning the screen. :C I had planned on having that phone for a while.
