Maybe that's why I have such a grudge against D&D's 4E, especially in Forgotten Realms - because they removed a lot of gods that made Faerûn so interesting and complex.

I had a copy of Faiths and Pantheons, which dates back to 3/3.5E, and the numerous gods it detailed were cool and implied a lot of social complexity, but then when 4E hit, they sheered off a lot of them, merged some who shared portfolios in different racial pantheons, and made up stupid stories for the fluff to explain why they removed some of the more popular ones.

I like fictional mythologies that try to be genuinely complex, with conflicting ideologies showing their effect in mortal society. I don't want bullshit reasons for de-complicating them.
