You totally can, though. I had my last phone for three or four years before my father accidentally bricked it. I'm coming up on three years with my current phone and it still works just fine.

3 or 4 years is still wasteful compared to landlines though. And not everyone is fortunate enough to have their phone continue to work through the years. I've had batteries die out on a 4 year old phone only for the cell company to tell me they don't make that battery anymore, and I had to get a new phone.

Except landlines are completely useless when your job requires you to have constant access to your phone and e-mail. I'm going out of town this weekend and need to be accessible to answer questions if needed. A landline isn't going to cut it there.
