Oh god no, I'm not one of those people. I had one as a beta for one of my stories once and - nope. Insulting and belittling young writers, no matter what they are writing and why, is just plain wrong. Nobody asks to have their confidence trampled by strangers over the internet, and betas who think that a request for constructive criticism is free reign to do that should be slapped.

I ask questions, for more clarification or to understand why they chose what they did, and I point out basic spelling and grammar errors. I always point out things that are interesting, or that I think were done really well, because I think reminding a writer of the positives of their story is important when you're volunteering to point out the negatives.

I've been beta for quite a few people now, because I've been hanging around since maybe 2006, 2007? It's just this one fandom (naming no names, because that's not fair or kind) that seems poisoned by ego.
