I think it depends? I mean, while changed gender roles set in a world that is supposed to be our own except with added other elements like steampunk or dragons doesn't bug me, but I can sort of understand why it might others, though I think the way the complaint is framed can bother me sometimes. But in a complete fictional world that isn't our own at all? Then no. Just because a fantasy world is quasi-medieval doesn't make it our world, so there is nothing weird about gender roles being different. Complaining about gender roles in a completely fictional world is just stupid.

Oh well if it's not even set on Earth then I agree, yeah.

I love worlds with fairly egalitarian societies with the technological advancements of Medieval Europe. (Wheel of Time is a favorite for this among many reasons)

I couldn't get into Wheel of Time. It sounds really interesting, but I really didn't like the writing style.

That's understandable.

This is pretty much how I feel. If it's a fantasy society that's clearly meant to be based on a real society except with dragons/steampunk/whatever, then I expect it to be fairly close to that real society with the exception of the fantastical element. But like you said, in an entirely fictional world, there's no reason for gender roles and all of that to be the same.
