(Anonymous) 2016-02-10 01:05 am (UTC)(link)It's not about limits to what readers will accept. It's about there being rules to settings, and if you're setting something in our world or a place resembling our world, we expect at least the setting to work. Introducing fantasy elements is an entirely different aspect.
And can we in the comments not be so Eurocentric? Damn man you'd think nobody else but white people made fantasy stuff. I don't see people complaining that Chinese fantasy isn't diverse despite there being 50+ ethnic groups and a very diplomatically open history.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-10 01:50 am (UTC)(link)Let's be real here, we'll start critiquing Chinese sci-fi/fantasy when we all learn Chinese. We're "Eurocentric" because a)That's where the overwhelming majority of us live, an b)because that's the overwhelming majority of the historical fantasy that gets shoved down our throats. As someone who loves things like Indian mythology, and Japanese folktales, I'm a bitter fuck about that, but that's the reality. You're basically asking people to comment about shit they don't know about. You know what? That's a conversation that Chinese authors have to have amongst themselves on Chinese message boards in Chinese if it's an issue in contemporary historical fiction in China.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-10 07:23 am (UTC)(link)That's kind of the point though, and you seem to have missed it. We're not talking about these things because they're really not available? You wanna share this magical repository of contemporary Chinese historical fiction that you seem to have stumbled upon? And lastly, I think you're vastly overestimating the amount of people who are ESL in here. But, the ones who are ESL? It's because how many replies do you think they would get if they started talking in Mandarin or Polish?
