That's stupid. There is no oppression chart. Or their shouldn't be. All types of oppression are equally bad.

I've seen such a chart. I don't think it was trying to imply racism is worse than sexism but that white women are more privileged than PoC men. I'm not sure I agree with that but mostly I just think it's way too nuanced to quantify like that.

There is certainly an oppression chart. So much so, some groups even change whether or not certain groups are POC based on how many oppression points they'll give them.

Asians are POC to BLM groups until they start saying negative things about black men harassing them and then they are told to shut up.

ugh

I guess they forgot about this guy?

(the whole "safe space" concept is being done really really wrong if your post is anything to go by. and I've heard similar stories too)

Hispanics and less so Asians are like Schrodinger's POC.

When they do something good (Tyler Posey), they are POC.

When they do something bad (George Zimmerman), they are white.

...that's a really apt comparison.

On Tumblr there's definitely an implied oppression chart. On the subject of street harassment, I haven't forgotten the post that said "White women: Men can go out wherever they want whenever they want without being afraid! Black men: [Look at the camera like they're on The Office]"

So do white women get to look at the camera when black men say "White people can go wherever they want whenever they want without being afraid"? Or do black men never say that becaue they're perfect and know how to be intersectional?

Plus about a billion.

In this essay I read on racial microaggressions, the authors hypothesized that a white female therapist telling a black patient, "I understand where you're coming from because of my gender and sexism" would be undercutting the black patient's experiences and it would be racist because her experiences with sexism could never rival his experiences with racism. So I have seen that view expressed in a published scholarly essay.

That's crap because the reverse is equally too. Sexism is different than racism but no less bad. A black man can't possibly understand what it is like to deal with sexism anymore than a white woman knows how to deal with racism.

It's true that she shouldn't say that because she doesn't know what experiencing racism is like and therefore is undercutting his experience by claiming to understand it. But that shouldn't imply that experiencing sexism is less bad. It's just that the sexism she experiences isn't relevant to what her patient is telling her.

Yup, exactly. And the reverse is also true. If he were the one trying to say he understood her experience as a woman because of racism that would be equally bad. All discriminations are equal but that doesn't mean they are the same, and experiencing one does not mean you understand what it is like to deal with another.

You can understand something without experiencing it, though.

Only to a certain extent. Honestly, if you say "I understand" in a situation like that, it comes off as meaning "I know how you feel," which you don't. You can only understand it as a concept and something that you've witnessed happen to other people, not as an experience you've felt yourself.
