If you are trying to say a Victorian steampunk society would have complete equality for women and gay people because airships and dragons exist, then I want to know why the advent of airships and dragons would totally change the course of women's and gay people's rights, because as others have said, if it's set in an alternate version of the Real World, then the non-fantastical parts will be held up against Real Life for comparison.

Basically, I want the non-fantastical parts to make a tiny bit of sense. I don't expect a whole chapter to explain it, maybe just one sentence, somewhere.

No one is saying fantasy technology would be the catalyst for changing things. People are just wondering why it's easier for so many to accept impossible technology than it is for them to accept sped-up human rights and representation. Why are impossible technology and dragons "fantasy, so it's okay" but POC and civil rights "unrealistic"? Why do you need the latter explained and ~justified, but not the former?

People aren't trying to say that you're wrong for not being unable to suspend your disbelief, but that the fact some things are easier to suspend disbelief for than others is interesting from a sociological standpoint.

Like I rarely see people complain about Link being able to wield a sword with no realistic exhaustion penalty, even as a small child. He's allowed to be a slender prettyboy with a supernatural ability to never get tired, no matter how much he's fighting or running around. But the minute female characters swinging swords come up someone has to start yelling about how women are naturally too weak and fragile to do combat and it's unrealistic. Why all of a sudden are people concerned about this when applied to a woman, but not to a small boy?

It's the context of the medium. For instance, I wouldn't bat an eye if there was a little girl running around Hyrule doing Link stuff. I would however bat both eyes mightily at either of them doing that in Chicago. And btw: Hardly anyone ever frames it as "that's intersting from a sociological standpoint." It's almost always "Of course it's the GIRL you find unrealistic," complete with implied or outright said "you sexist piece of garbage."
