you can do that anyway, with any fandom you want. there are countless iterations of every such fictional universe and you can shape your headcanon to suit any of them.

Sure, but that's not very easy for me. My mind somehow links things up and things can get retroactively ruined for me.

ayrt- That's understandable. You might be able to kind of practice your way through it, given time and a fandom you give enough of a shit about. But in the end, whatever works for you. :)

Yeah, I get that. It sort of sucks the didn't get their happy ending, didn't it?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I can agree with this

And I'll just be over here happily enjoying my Legends, at least the pre-NJO stuff. I liked the Force Awakens, but for me that is the alternate universe. I can't give up Mara and all the other EU characters I grew to love. And Luke/Mara is forever and always my Star Wars OTP.

Hi, me, how did you write this without me knowing?? Yeah, I like TFA well enough but it's not MY Star Wars.

Well, I'm pretty happy with TFA. But then again, I was never deeply into the EU after episode 6. I didn't like the writing styles of so many of those authors. I'm only really salty about certain Clone Wars era novels being dropped and that's about it.

I'm disappointed how TFA handled the original trio, it basically fucked over all of them in both plot and character.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I wished the Timothy Zahn trilogy didn't got shoved onto "legends". Those novels should have been the sequel trilogy we've wanted as it was sitting right there begging to be filmed for years. Besides, Mara Jade was a badass female character.

Me, too, OP.

TFA is an AU as far as I'm concerned.

DA would be okay with this, if it meant I could write TFA fic without feeling like I need to know the EU inside and out.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
I love the original trilogy, but I'm pretty happy with what happened in TFA.

I also have no allegiance to the EU, because canon begins and ends with the films.

"because canon begins and ends with the films."

This is me, too. I never understood the levels of canon that Lucasfilm maintained. Why can't the novels just be novels? I think that Star Trek does that, and the reader can mentally sort them into their own 'fanon', 'AU' or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
You should enjoy the franchise however you wish. It does kind of suck that they had such sad paths, but for me the movies are the only Star Wars canon for better or for worse.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-12 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm happy you found a way to enjoy it, OP.

I enjoy it as a continuation of the OT. I never cared for the EU - I don't think I would have enjoyed seeing Winter or Mara Jade or even Jacen and Jaina. Never rang for me.
