I mean not even in a sexy way, just in a "how would this work" way. I suppose it would also matter which stage of Dean's story he's in. It could be an interesting connection (especially MCU Steve, I think), with them both being sort of "flawed heroes", in different ways.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-12 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)I'd love recs for comics and for fic. Canonical and AU are both good. The one strong preference I have is for happy endings. I don't mind a bit of angst, but I'm generally not into grimdark stuff. And I didn't care much for the Civil War fics I've read.

Comics! Lets see - one of my favorite eras of Avengers is the run that started in 1998, also known as volume 3, although most fans don't refer to them as volumes anymore. The idea was that every time the Avengers started over at issue #1 again -- not rebooting the story, but just restarting the numbering so as to not be too intimidating to new readers -- it was a new volume. But in the last decade Marvel has started the issue numbering back at 1 over and over again, so referring to volumes isn't as useful.
Anyway, I love this run because the story is very character-driven, but it's not weighed down with constant tragedy the way a lot of newer Avengers stories are. Steve and Tony have a lot of great moments. If you want to give it a shot, I have scans of the first three issues posted on my LJ here (click the next entry to find the next issue): http://garrideb.livejournal.com/20914.html
Slightly more modern is the storyline Avengers: Red Zone, which has gorgeous art, creepy atmosphere, and a scene where Tony gives Steve mouth-to-mouth. The actual plot is about as subtle as an anvil, but, well, you can't have everything. The storyline starts at Avengers (1998) #65, but it's also available as a trade paperback. (Most of the earlier volume three stuff is only available in giant hardcover collections.)
Then there's the question, "Should I read Civil War?" The answer is probably no, especially if you aren't enjoying the fic. If you wanted to dip your toes into the CW comics, just read the Iron Man: Civil War trade. It's not happy, but it is incredibly focused on Steve and Tony's very broken love. I did make a fanvid with scans from the Civil War comics, if you'd like to just spend 3 and a half minutes looking at comic art set to a Matchbox 20 song. That's here: http://cap-ironman.livejournal.com/667915.html
Let's see, fic. Well, here's a Roman AU based on the Ultimate-verse comics (if you don't know what that is, don't worry about it, it just means the characterization will be a bit different)
The Emperor's Fury, by valtyr http://archiveofourown.org/works/240045
And here's a fic by my roommate, about Steve's art and Tony being a snoop:
Scale and Perspective, by destroythemeek http://archiveofourown.org/works/189670
Let me know if you have further questions!
