I think David Bowie would call you a fucking idiot for that attitude. Lady Gaga (the only person I have a bit of knowledge about) is basically a student of Bowie's whole shtick. She is also an amazing singer.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
student? she wrote the fucking thesis.

Gaga is 100% here because of Bowie, and she earned that place.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Not a terribly good student, though. She seems to have missed the point that behind the style, you also need substance or your career flames out rather quickly. For example, eight years into his career, Bowie was still climbing to his critical and commercial peak and he was and will be an icon long after his death.

Eight years into her career, Lady Gaga doesn't seem to have one.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Uh huh. Bowie never had a period of time where he didn't have a lull in his career. Neveeeerrrrrrr.

Also, it helps that for those 8 years Bowie had a regular supply of milk, peppers, and cocaine to help him be so influential.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't say he didn't have a lull, did I? What many people consider Bowie's down period lasted longer than Lady Gaga's whole career. If Lady Gaga comes back and enjoys another 20+ years as an amazing singer, songwriter and performer rather than a bedazzled clothing rack, I'll be happy to reassess my opinion.

It's a bit silly to credit drugs for a career like Bowie's when there are rehabs full of people with worse habits who can't even hold down a job at Burger King. If that's what you think, I'm not sure why you feel equipped to comment on David Bowie's music at all.

I'm not sure what you're saying. Are you saying that the infamous milk/peppers/cocaine period was a "lull"? Because he created the Berlin Trilogy during that period, arguably the top three most avant garde and influential albums of his career. Not to mention Young Americans, in which he created an entire new genre of music.

Fuck you, I'm in Tin Machine!

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, okay, except for that whole award winning streak on AHS, the set of duets with Bennett that proved her chops, fucking nailing the national anthem and proving to even MORE people that this is a woman that, if you take away the meat dresses and the weird hats, can motherfucking SING -

yeah bud, she's doing fine. Bowie rode high and low over decades, with the pre-space oddity years falling into a black hole only to be matched (arguably) with the general malaise of his Tin Machine period. It's not going to be a wave-to-wave parallel with Gaga, but by any metric, she's still got her place carved out in the pop culture ecosystem.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
So you think Lady Gaga won her acting award at the Golden Globes due to her excellent acting skills? lol.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
This is a tar baby of a battle I have no interest in getting into with you, particularly since it's rather clear your mind is made up and you're just setting in for the night with a giant nappie full of wet shit.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Still mad about the award thing. Kristen Durst gave the best performance of her career, she was robbed

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
She wasn't bad, but definitely far from great. Hell, if they wanted to give an award to AHS give it to an actual actress like Kathy Bates or Sarah Paulson.

NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2016-02-12 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, I know, right!?! Her acting was totally WEAK.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
AHS - I'll stop you right there, because lol

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you have the capability to formulate your own opinions, but it doesn't mean you get to speak for everyone.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I thought she did a kick-ass job on the Sound of Music tribute to Julie Andrews at the Oscars, too. Talk about freaking pressure.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
You fucking useless snob.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt - I'm not sure it's snobbish to hold the opinion that David Bowie has had a longer more successful career than Lady Gaga. It's just reality. But Gaga is young yet and has enormous potential. Even if she doesn't top David Bowie, well... that's not exactly failure is it? How many could?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
2009: unquestionably the biggest star on the planet by an enormous margin
2015: supporting actress on a trashy low-rating american tv show

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Ouch. I honestly had no opinion about her but when you put it like that...

Well to be fair, Bowie's acting career was pretty mixed.

2016: Killed the national anthem at the Super Bowl, nominated for an Oscar, performing David Bowie tribute at the Grammys and should be releasing another anticipated album.

You sound like one of those anti-stans from ONTD who proclaims any singer's career dead/irrelevant if they aren't the biggest start in the whole wide world.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's too early to compare lifetime careers here.

Also, early success doesn't automatically lead to early flameout, at least not a permanent one. You'll have to wait and see.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Gimme a fucking break. David Bowie is awesome. Lady Gaga is almost as untalented as Madonna (who seems to at least have had the sense to hang up her guns by now.)

Being an amazing singer with decent taste in music doesn't make you a visionary of the same caliber as Bowie. If anything, the best of what she's done blatantly rips off other artists' greatness. And I say this as someone who genuinely enjoys her music. But it's pretty much pure pop: easily digestible and ultimately ephemeral. Can you see her releasing an album like Low or "Heroes"? Or, for that matter, Blackstar?
