Lent

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
For those that observe it, what are you giving up?

Side note, I read somewhere where a person was instead of doing a sacrifice, but giving back by volunteering in a soup kitchen or something to that effect. That was interesting to me as I've only heard of people giving up something. Not giving back.

Dang, it's been a while since I've actually given up something. I'll try my best not eat meat on Fridays, but I doubt I'll do much more.

Same here. I might try going to church more, but other than doing the no meat Fridays, I don't think I am going give up anything.

Think of it as a giving up of free time.

I can't find it, but there's a lovely video of a slow, sensual lesbian matchup (with a third girl watching) that involves a feeldoe. Nnnnnnnnf.

I give up alcohol every year and volunteer to be everyone's DD for Lent. It works out well for me.

My college roommate did that where she would volunteer more during Lent and then try to keep up with it partially throughout the year. I think she'd volunteer 2-3 times a week during Lent and try to stick with at least once a week the rest of the year.

Chocolate (which is easy and I've done before) and YouTube (which is super difficult)

I believe lent is supposed to be threefold, fasting (giving something up) almsgiving (giving to the needy) and prayer (to get closer to god).

It's been a long time since I was a practicing catholic, but I used to cut p much all refined sugar from my diet (so fruit or honey were fine, chocolate pudding was not).

I remember a lot of people used to start going to the chapel of perpetual adoration every year (I was part of the 24/7 vigil crew so it was always really noticeable just how many new faces would show up during my hours).

Volunteering is great, but I think it's sort of missing the point? If you're able, as a good Catholic you're supposed to be volunteering your time anyway. Lent is about sacrifice, giving up something that you enjoy or doing something that requires a large amount of self-control like fasting. Maybe the experience will encourage this person to volunteer year-round, though.

I'm giving up coffee. I almost forgot it was Ash Wednesday and almost ate some bacon this morning. Then I remembered and got sad because I couldn't have bacon.

I miss all of it already.

It's funny. I live in a Catholic country, I went to Catholic school, some of my family is Catholic, and yet the first I heard about giving up things during Lent is here on FS. I should ask my mom about it... Wish I could ask my grandma because she used to be a lot more observant than mom, but she doesn't remember much these days.

Every year I tell myself I'm going to give up all the usual (meat, eggs, dairy, fandomsecrets) and go to church more often, but I never do.
