Windows 10

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I have Windows 8.1 now, but I'm considering upgrading. Has anyone upgraded to 10? If so, what are your opinions? For those who haven't upgraded, what are your reasons?

Never upgrading until necessary because what I've got works just fine thanks.

My mom upgraded from 8 & loved it; I recently bought a computer with Windows 10 (but I'm keeping Windows 7 on my laptop since there's nothing wrong with it) and it seems to be a decent combination of the best parts of 7 & 8? I like it a lot.

If you must get it, get it with a new computer. That way t won't erase anything.

However, disable automatic updates. I didn't even know you could until an auto update killed my internet. (So now I'm back to using an old crappy one until I get it fixed.)

I'm not looking to buy a new laptop anytime soon. What does it erase? I haven't heard anything about updates erasing things.

I jumped to Ubuntu after a dead hard drive due to the data issue.

I updated and I like the apps interface much better than 8. For the record, my laptop was brand new right before 10 came out.

My only issue is that the display driver keeps crashing. It's only momentarily, and it always reboots itself, but it could be a problem during games.

No, and I'm lazy.

I was so annoyed at how tablet-"friendly" 8 was that I upgraded to 10 in a hurry and I've been happy with it!

Also, it has Solitaire pre-loaded on it.

What do you hate about it?

The turning everything into apps/treating it like an iPhone for settings or customisation. The search box which is inefficient and I had to edit with regedit to be able to search for files properly. It is still hit and miss. The new program layout in the start menu. The calling everything apps when they're not, they're programs and files. The fact is need to opt out if EVERYTHING and it treats my computer like a bloody phone. The initial set up stages where I had to go through and disable all this phone relayed crap. It's a PC, it doesn't need location services and I don't want them!

The only thing I do like is the option for little custom icons at different sizes and dx 12 (why I got it). I did appreciate the upgrade not erasing any files and leaving my wallpaper as is.

I'm going to pretty much have to update with my new computer. Can I get the info for the regedit? My girlfriend has Win10 and I've seen the search box and while I could probably get used to the rest, that's the part that would drive me furious.

The search box was the most infuriating. When I get to work I can pull up my records.

Another thing, because the both renamed the all programs to apps and changed the menu layout I am forever struggling to find things. You can no longer see the folders or company names, it goes straight to program name?! Sometimes I do not remember program name! Just the company! Like open office or Microsoft or Adobe. But instead of being nearly orders under companies it is alphabetical by program name! So word is down the bottom and excel up top!

Oh and I forgot. Even with auto updates disabled...IT STILL AUTO UPDAYES WHEN I TURN IT OFF FOR THE NIGHT.

I haven't upgraded because I'm seriously broke and my job pays crap, so I don't have any extra money to upgrade. I really need to though because my main computer is still running XP (I know, I know).

Re: Windows 10

I'm sticking with windows 8 for the time being because some of the programs on my computer aren't compatible with windows 10. Plus, I actually like windows 8. I've never had any issues or difficulty using it, so I don't want to mess with a good thing if I can help it

Re: Windows 10

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
I've held off because my mom (a seriously tech savvy person) has had endless problems with it. Plus Windows 8 irritates me enough with all the metro/app/cutesy slide-out sidebar crap and what I've seen of Windows 10 would make me want to chuck my laptop out a window.

Some issues she's had
-the Wifi connectivity interface has changed. You can no longer view how much data you've used on a particular signal or set data caps on specific connections. which is REALLY FUCKING BAD for people who have any sort of metered data plan, or switch between limited and unlimited connections (for example using a hotspot while at work but your household signal at home).
-lots of "apps" working slowly or outright crashing, or interfering with non-Microsoft programs
-No way to disable auto-updating (hope you like being unable to turn on/off your computer b/c windows needs to update RIGHT NOW) (also hope you have unlimited data b/c ur gonna be using a ludicrous amount of it each month on stupid updates and their accompanying tutorial videos)
-lots of little UI issues like the shitty search or how it's basically designed to work great as a phone/tablet/console OS while being fucking horrible as a PC OS

If you use google earth a lot then don't, GE will crash randomly when used on W10.
