Do it anyways remotely (send them cards or small presents). Who cares if they think it's cheesy? I always think letting your loved ones know you care about them I appreciated.

I scrolled down to say this too! Send them a note telling them you appreciate their friendship, or maybe listing a few of your favorite attributes of theirs. Even the most cynical person will usually appreciate being told nice things about themselves.
