have to rant

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
The vet thinks my cat might have cancer. I am really freaking out about that because I have no idea how I'll be able to pay for it and keep a roof over our heads and I'm terrified that we'll get 2 months into treatment, have to stop when the money runs out and wind up with a dying cat, no money and no fucking way to gently end her life at the very fucking least. All of this is at least one fucking thousand dollars of MISFUCKINGDIAGNOSES! I'm so angry and scared and I can't stop thinking about how energetic and playful she was before and how FUCKING MISERABLE AND IN PAIN SHE IS NOW. I wish I could help her. I want to help her. I'm really afraid that I can't.

I am so sorry to hear, anon. That'd be the worst news... did you talk to the vet about costs for treatments, and how optimistic the outlook is if you can do treatment? I'm really sorry. Maybe you could try to get a GofundMe thing going, get help from Facebook friends, or something. I wish you and your cat the best, I know there's nothing worse than being in the position of having to choose to gently let your pet die, and I really hope no matter what, you'll be able to do what's best for the cat.

Is getting a second opinion cost-prohibitive? If this vet has repeatedly misdiagnosed your cat, maybe a second opinion will help you make your decision.

hugs to you and kitty!

I've lost two to cancer in less than two years. They were both pretty bad off by the time they started showing symptoms (the second one lived less than a month after diagnosis), so I doubt chemo would have helped even if I'd had the money. I'm sure I would have tried it anyway if there was a decent chance at substantially more life and good quality of that life, but my understanding is that the cancer very rarely goes away and stays away. They go into remission for a short time, and when it comes back, it's much worse. Animal oncologists give them a much lower dose of chemo than humans would get proportionally because unlike us, they can't look ahead and understand that they're being made to feel horrible temporarily, in the hope of getting better. The first vet offered us prednisone, which was only about $6 a month but made the whole process much harder because the effects are so deceptive. She did so well for a few months that I thought she'd been misdiagnosed and might really be okay, then she went downhill and was gone in a week. So, you know, there are lots of shitty factors to consider in the whole world of shit that is feline cancer. I wish I had more optimistic stuff to say. I can tell you that I never got a misdiagnosis or an iffy diagnosis at all, so like the other anon said, you might want to have her looked at elsewhere if it's possible. I know how miserable they get and I'm really sorry. Feel free to ask me about anything else that might help you at all, if you want to.

I'm so sorry. We lost a kitty last year, to unknown causes, but by the time we lost him, the vet was shocked because he was effectively having organs dissolve. We had him euthanised because at that point, you can't do anything.

For kitties, cancer treatment is very iffy. I haven't had to deal with it personally but I've friends who went through treatment and the kitty was miserable, in terrible condition, had no real quality of life, and in the end, didn't make it. This has been multiple experiences, btw.

As much as it hurts (and believe me, I know how much it does, even when it is the only real, humane option), I would give serious thought to euthanasia. Consider how horrid cancer treatment is for humans, and that cats can't understand what's going on. All they'll know is that they're sick from the treatment, sick from the illness, and in the end, it's a traumatizing experience even should they make it.

It's a hard decision and I support you whatever decision you make. But I thought you should be aware of the reality of treatment and its effects.

But, if there have been many misdiagnoses, I also second the person who suggests getting a second experiences. Knowing the diagnosis is cancer, another vet should be able to double check whether this is actually the correct diagnosis without thousands of dollars. With the effects of cancer treatment, and the hard decisions you face, I would want a second opinion myself.

*hugs offered, if desired*
