Too Big 2: You know what they say about assuming. Last time I checked, I had a collection of VHS tape anime from back in the day. I had to look at anime in the porn aisle of the video stores because it was considered less than that at the time. I taped everything I could off tv. I suffered through really bad dubs. I watched fansubbed videos and all that good old school crap...and I still download anime. It's there for me to watch. It's not coming out in the states for at least a year. I might as well download it. And if it kicks ass, I'll add it to my collection when/if it ever gets licensed. In short, I don't give a shit what you think. The only ones ruining things are the people who sit back and bitch about things like that, trying to make people feel bad with your big bad cred and useless guilt trips. Get over yourself.

*hands you a BIG plate of cookies*

I remember when anime first hit the American shores and people were calling it "Japanimation". I still cringe when I hear that word. I remember scouring the internet (such as it was back then) for translations of manga. And I too still download anime. I find it more fun to stay ahead of the game with new titles anyway.

[identity profile] srsfnbsns.livejournal.com 2008-03-03 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! Cookies!

Yeah. People would say Japanimation and I was like "nooooooooo, that's not what it isssssssss!" Worse yet, when people ragged on me for watching cartoons I got upset. Sure, it was animated, but my cartoon had more depth than ten of my mom's soap operas.

I like how OP seems to be conveniently blocking out the part where subs existed back then too. There were sites that you could go to and order video tapes of subbed materials. If they were so big into anime back then, they probably have a few of them. Hello hypocrite!

I love downloading. I can watch all sorts of things and if it sucks, I never have to waste a penny on it. If I love it, I saved lots of money so that I can buy up all sorts of merchandise for the things I love! If the industry offered me a better way to sample before I bought, I'd use their way. I don't want to kill anime, but as a consumer, I like to be able to make better decisions on my purchases, it's not like I'm made of money and can buy every piece of crap that comes down the pipes.

You're welcome for the cookies!

I still get ragged for watching 'cartoons' but not as badly as I used to. The only time I get upset is if someone refuses to give anime any kind of chance simply because it's animated and it therefore "for kids". I don't know about you, but I've seen quite a few anime that were definitely NOT kid friendly.

Your reasons are exactly the same as mine for loving downloading series. It's helped me save so much money. There have been series I've downloaded and adored and there have been series I've downloaded and have disliked. I guess I'm also fortunate in that my local library carries anime dvds. If there is a series I've just learned of and it's already been liscensed, I can often times borrow it from my library. The only cost to me is the gas money I use to get there, and since I love going to the library it's no big deal for me.

If there was a better way to see new anime and give it a test drive, I'd be all for it as well. I simply don't have the money (much less the ROOM) to purchase every new series that comes out.

I get it on the rare occasion, but only from my parents and ironically, I attend anime conventions with a lot of people their age.

The blood, guts, gore and nudity that can often pop up in anime along with porn, and mature plots should assure anyone saying that it's for kids, that it is not. More than a cursory glance should tell them but people are too used to blanket judgment calls than bothering to make informed decisions and that's with everything. =/

I just think it's silly to expect people to buy everything. We're not all made of money or using our parents' credit cards.

This is something my mother learned the HARD way. I had rented some Ranma 1/2 videos from my local Blockbuster and had them in my room. I went to work and while I was gone my older sister dropped her son off for my mom to watch him. He was about 8 and was still watching cartoons, so my mom (in a stroke of genius) thinks that she'll let him watch the videos I rented and it'll keep him out of trouble.

Let's just say, when I came home from work later that evening, the first words out of my mother's mouth were "What the hell did you rent??"

(Anonymous) 2008-03-04 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
It talked about VHS fansubs. \(O_o)/

[identity profile] srsfnbsns.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, so they condone old VHS dubs and they'll download unlicensed stuff and that's ok. Suuure. That's like saying "I only ate the ingredients for the food, I didn't eat the actual food, so therefore I didn't steal it like they said." Nope. It doesn't work that way. You can't be half-pirate. If you're stealing, you're stealing. You don't get to pass judgment on anyone else.

[identity profile] inuyatta.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think the point they were making is that people who download LICENSED anime are children. =X

Other than that, I agree with you for the most part. I really just stopped here to tell you that Viz and FUNimation are offering previews on their websites and Amazon.com. ADV is actually putting up bittorrents of the first few episodes on their site for free, the way I understand it.

Then again, a lot of anime fans don't appear to be as reasonable as you are--at least you make the attempt to buy the licensed products you like. As it is, most titles that aren't Bleach/Naruto or Deathnote are lucky to sell 500 copies of anything, nationally. =\

[identity profile] srsfnbsns.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
And I'm pointing out that they're an idiot and that's their opinion.

I think this is less the fans fault and more the industry's fault that things don't sell. Yes, anime is popular, yes people want to watch it, no we don't want to buy every piece of crap you bring over. If they were more selective and quality focused, I think they'd have a higher purchase rate. If they don't figure out something quick, they're going down with the ship and we're all screwed.

I'm pretty sure the secret said "licensed anime". Unlicensed should be fine. o.o

Re: tb!2

[identity profile] srsfnbsns.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
If I'm going to be paying money for it later, I will download it today to try it out. Consider it a test drive. What we download now, licensed or otherwise, completely affects our spending habits.

[identity profile] kxo.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Amen!

Hahaha, I had totally forgotten that it used to be next to the porn in video stores! I used to have staff hovering around me just to make sure I wasn't trying to shoplift softcore or something. And taping everything on the TV, too. I remember setting my VCR to tape the early-morning anime on the Sci-Fi channel and Toonami on CN. Gawd, those were the days.
