39) I don't think Heidrich is a Nazi (there is no sign at all that ever joins the party, that he's courted by the Thule society says nothing about his politics, only his usefulness) -- what's more, this was back in 1922 -- long before the horrors and atrocities of nazi-ism. There was simply no reason for people to suspect that the Nazi party would one day be equated with the worst that humans can do to each other. Hindsight is easy. Foresight is tough.

In other words, enjoy your Heidrich, guilt free.

48) I think "addiction" is sometimes thrown around when something is merely a habit -- but that doesn't mean there isn't such a thing as actual addiction. Alcoholism is not just a matter of shirking responsibility -- it's about changed brain chemistry. Get off your high horse.

54) I had the same reaction (and no I don't know how it would work).

66) Me too! (The shipwars in the Avatar fandom are ridiculous)

Thank you so much for your logic and sense-making. You and all the other commenters to my secret have made me feel so much better. *Happy*

I'm not saying that there's no such thing as a real addiction, I know there is. I'm saying that people need to take personal responsibility and admit that they started it in the first place. You have to make an active choice to intake something that is addictive. Don't blame the substance, blame yourself and get help.

I can kinda understand your point for heroine, always a controlled substance, and the internet, which isn't a physical addiction, but alcohol? Those alcoholics who I've met were addicted from the very first swallow. It wasn't a matter of not knowing better, or self-control. The first drink they took made them an addict -- and they will always be an addict for their entire lives. Alcohol is a socially acceptable pastime, both legal, and actually encouraged. A family history might suggest not drinking (I've known teetotalers who avoided ever drinking alcohol for precisely that reason) but until you have the first drink you don't know if you are an alcoholic or not.

Now some people abuse alcohol and aren't alcoholics too. My grandmother was one of those. She drank way too much, but when she felt like it, she just stopped. It was purely a psychological issue for her. My friend Wendy on the other hand had her first 12 pack the first day she drank. She's 14 years sober now.
