Dude, I agree with you completely. There's a reason why I can't get into a great deal of anime. I can't just drop my interests at the door, and strong female characters is certainly one of them. I agree with zettosan, you need to watch less shonen. Things are getting a little bit better in Western animation, but the conservatism of the majority of action-oriented shonen series just boggles me. Not that there aren't many examples of strong female heroes in some of them, but sadly I don't see many of them in the series I've watched.

Hey, have you tried watching Mai HiME? It's shoujo, but is completely action-packed, with a gripping storyline and a huge cast of exciting female characters.

Mai HiME actually annoys me more then anything. I mean, it has some cool action and has a nice plot, but the plot device of "A HiME can never have sex with a man" is clearly a device for tons of lesbian fanservice, which is kinda cheap if you ask me. :/

I mean, it's a cast of ALL females. Did the writers really expect the fans to totally not ship them together?

Actually, you're thinking of Mai Otome, Mai HiME's inferior (IMO) sequel, which takes the same characters from the show and puts them into a fantasy setting. I think it misses out on what made the previous Mai HiME great, which was it had real characters in what first seems to be a typical Magical Girls plot, and then destroys all your expectations, putting your head on a top and spinning.

In Mai HiME, virginity is not the source of their powers, instead it's their emotions towards their very special person. There is a healthy amount of fan service for both the boys and the girls, but I don't necessarily mind that as long as it doesn't undermine the characters. There are also lesbian characters, textually and subtextually, which would be fine except the show indulges in the Psycho Lesbian trope, which is the only problem I have with it.

That storyline does end better than it usually does, though.
