This. Slayers appear to be taken away from their families most of the time. Buffy was different because Giles treated her differently and recognized that she was someone who needed attachments to function. But for a while he still followed what he had been taught because he didn't know better, and Buffy was protective of her mom and also didn't want to be stopped from slaying.
