Re: Rant Thread

Mine is a stupid rant about things I've seen people say either on this comm or elsewhere many times before (and entire goddamn forum arguments and pointless flamewars about it). It just irks me.

"that's not what fanfiction is supposed to be about"

Tell me what is fanfiction supposed to be about then?

Because from where I'm standing fanfiction is supposed to be about possibilities. About covering ground that the canon couldn't or didn't cover for whatever reason. What the canon suggested but didn't have time to cover or couldn't because of network restriction or whatever.

It's about exploring the characters by putting them through something different. It's about what might have happened if this happened instead of that.

For Want of A Nail AUs that explore what could have been. Alternate continuations that explore another way the story could go. AUS where the characters are plucked in a different setting. Or just AUs of "boring" settings like schools or workplaces and everyday stuff that explore characterization. OCs? Why the fuck not? (I mean hell what if someone wanted to write about life at Beauxtabons or Durmstrang or some school in Australia. That would use OCs).

Crossovers? Why the fuck not?

All of these are "what fanfiction is about" as much as a shipping fic or a fic that's set after the canon and follows all of the author's information about what happened.

This isn't a complaint about people not liking certain things in fanfiction. But fucking hell do I hate when people act like there's this one thing fanfiction is ~supposed~ to be about.

If fanfiction is supposed to be about anything, it's possibility.

I've only ever seen "that's not what fanfic is about" in reference to people that staunchly stick to canon and refuse to go outside of it at all-- no AUs, no ships that aren't canon ships, no exploration of anything that isn't already present. In other words, a complete lack of possibility. Which...I'd argue, yeah, isn't what fanfic is about.

Yeah. I mean I hate to sound like a jerk but personally I feel like that's kind of a waste if they think that's all you're allowed to do with canon.

I mean they're free to write as if they're ghostwriting for the canon author, but if they expect everyone else to do that, they can fuck off.

Policing fanfiction in general is really obnoxious.
