Looking to buy, upgrade, complain about what you have? Talk about it here.

Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 11.6" Touch Ultrabook: Yes or no? ($269). I've heard good things, but I'm nervous about the unreplaceable battery.

My laptop is on its way out and I'm not sure what to replace it with. Options:

A New Laptop: I could get something comparable to what I've got for $300-$400 (4GB RAM, 420 GB hard drive), but I also kind of want something that's light and compact and sleek. Obviously, the lighter and sleeker I get, the more money I'm spending.

Microsoft Surface: It definitely has the light sleekness going for it and Surface 3 is on sale for $530 (tablet plus keyboard cover). I like the idea of having a tablet that'll stand up on it's own when I don't want to be doing a lot of typing. I'm a little worried about it's physical size not being a good fit for my lap when I do want to be typing, though. Like, right now, I'm sitting on the couch with my legs folded up. The keyboard part is on one thigh, held into place by the weight of my hands and the hinge-y part isn't even touching anything. Also, when I do type, I don't want to be crowded, which has me concerned about size. And I'm always paranoid about space, but I've taken the plunge with dropbox, and I guess as long as I keep everything there backed up on an external drive, I might not need to worry too much about that...

Kindle: This is by far my cheapest option, but it's not so much a laptop replacer as it is a laptop extender. This thing will probably last longer if I don't use it as much, and if I can stream movies and shows and browse the web on my kindle, I'd really only need to be using the laptop for when I wanted to do a lot of typing. And if I bought the cheapo $50, I could test it out, surely get at least $10 a month of enjoyment out of it for five months, and then it's paid for itself. And if I find it's not a very good fit for me, I've only lost $50. It just goes back to the idea of liking the idea of having a tablet but not quite being ready to give up on laptop features. Also, I kind of feel like I'm not getting the most out of Amazon Prime because I don't really like Kindle Reader on my phone. But I've heard Kindle Reader is an entirely different animal from Kindle. But I'm a little worried about size and how easy it would be to lay down on the couch or in bed and watch something. This is actually true of the Surface, too.

I'm sure the answer is to go to a store and try things out. I can give Target a look, bu I think it's going to mean a trip out of town for the nearest Best Buy. (Another thing to consider is that my Galaxy S3 phone is three generations old and starting to act like it. So there might need to be a new phone in my future. But if I have something as easily transportable as a Kindle or Surface, I suppose I could get one of the dumber smartphones that I just used as a phone, music player and web browser in no wifi places.)

Stick with a new laptop. Tablets are nice for browsing the web and the occasional mobile game, but they're terrible for anything else.

What's the difference?

[personal profile] cyren2132 2016-02-17 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Can anyone tell me from a practical standpoint what the difference between Quad-core 1.3 GHz and Quad-core 1.5 GHz processors are? Looking at Kindle Fires and that for me seems to be the biggest difference between the $50 model and the $150 model.

The 1.5GHz is slightly faster. I don't recommend the Kindle Fire, though, we have two and they're junk.

In what way?

They're slow, crashy, clunky to use, uses some awful Amazon-ified variant of Android, and one of ours decided to simply stop functioning or charging or anything.

I got a bonus at work and I'm finally looking to upgrade my computer. Thing is, I'm not sure if I should upgrade it (I'm still running XP) or if I should just buy a new tower.

I'd lean toward the new machine unless you've been doing piecemeal upgrades here and there. There have been a lot of tech advances since XP was shipping new, and it seems easier to my eye to just get it all at once in a shiny new box.

Just buy a new one. You're using a ~15-year-old OS and I'm assuming your PC predates the Obama administration. Buying a new one will be much less of a hassle.

Maybe consider getting an external HD to move/back up all your stuff, though, if you don't have one already.

Definitely upgrade, if only because Microsoft doesn't support updates or troubleshooting to that OS anymore, so it's a security risk. If you don't want to go so far as Windows 8.1 and 10, because their interfaces are dramatically different from XP without third-party software, Windows 7 is still a really great OS.

Anyone recommend a good ergonomic keyboard and mouse? I've heard of the mice that turn your hand sideways (as though you are preparing to shake someone's hand). Are those good?

I have a Lenovo T431s and it's shit and I hate it and can't wait until it's old enough for me to justify buying a new laptop.

Just another $200 and I can buy that Geforce 970 I've had my eye on...
