It might be because not everybody keeps their fandom stuff and real life stuff carefully separated? I can think of one author who states plainly in her profile, "I will not ever post smut here because my parents know about this account". In other cases you could probably substitute co-workers, flatmates, kids etc for parents.

I mean, I'm sure there are other reasons, but that's one really obvious possibility. There are certain people in my life I certainly wouldn't want to have any knowledge about anything I do that's even remotely sexual.
