I think the average cosplayer is in their 20s. I'm 22. I've been cosplaying since I was 15. I've seen cosplayers from 8 to 80, and I haven't noticed anyone having a problem with it, so I'm sure you'll be fine. :) As far as how long it takes to become "good", I suppose varies from person to person. I can definitely say my costumes now are WAAAAY better than they used to be. lol Though, I suggest if you have little to no sewing experience to start with simple costumes and build your way up.

I'd recommend looking it up online for a start. Honest, sewing is pretty easy. Also, I guess maybe start with a simple costume that you can mostly buy the components of. That's what I'm doing.

Damn, that is kind of a pain. I guess I'm lucky that my costume has been so EASY. I think tracking down a wig will be the hardest part just because the colour is so weird.

Sure! I know reading about how to do something like sewing or drawing is never the same as being actually taught, but I learnt a kind of stitch from the internet, so it is possible. http://www.sewingsupport.com/ looks like it might be a good starting point.

There's a couple options. You can buy costumes; they have a lot on ebay. That's pretty pricey, though. If you don't have any sewing experience, you can try something simple. For example, you could just buy clothes are the store for L and Raito, from a thrift store even. I'm sure you could find some simple tutorials if you google it or something. Just start small. Sometimes the best way is to start with the accessories to the costume, like hair bows and earrings. :)

If you go to cosplay.com, a lot of times you can search the forums and find tips and tricks from other people who have cosplayed the characters. And if there's nothing, you can sign up and ask in one of the forums. I'm not going to lie, some people on there are pretty rude, but I would say that there are more nice people that are more than willing to share advice than not.
