28. I really hate to say it but sometimes I think characters who aren’t “pretty” (or older characters) do get a lot more love in live-action fandoms than in anime. I sometimes with I were in more of them because of that. (I’m not trying to bash other anime fans. And I don’t even think it’s a huge tragedy that people like fictional characters because they’re “hot” – like them for whatever reason you want. But I still think you have a point.)

63. ;_;

65. People would really get angry that you wish you could marry a fictional character because they ship him with someone else? It’s not like you’re going to magically insert yourself into the series.

I...I think I love your icon.

Thank you! [livejournal.com profile] iconform made it, though I did come up with the idea.

28 OP

I have nothing against people liking characters because they find them attractive. I do have something against people BASHING characters because they're not considered attractive. What really inspired this rant was me thinking about one of my all-time favorite anime characters, Kuwabara from Yu Yu Hakusho. He DOES have a following of fans, but the vast majority of fangirls either ignore him or outright bash him.

I couldn't help but think that, if he were a character in a live-action show, he would have gotten tons of fan appreciation. (This was largely because of the fan attention I saw payed to characters like Rodney McKay [Atlantis], Claude [Heroes], and Jack O'Neill [SG-1], all of whom are attractive, but certainly not 'pretty' in the bishounen sense.)

I agree with that 100%, yes.

One reason could be that in anime, characters are often drawn to reflect their personalities, i.e. cool/interesting characters are mostly drawn pretty or handsome.

That said, I have a vague impression of the SGA fandom being rather lyrical about this character's beauty...

That's actually a good point. And in some anime and manga there isn't much of a middle ground: Characters are either Really Pretty or total caricatures. (I love you Rumiko Takahashi, but honestly.)

That said, I think characters like Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop, who is not pretty but is cool and interesting if you ask me, sometimes get ignored or disliked where they might not be in a live-action.

Tell me about it; I'm currently watching One Piece. I love it dearly, and the only pretty ones are some of the women, and almost every character looks like a caricature. XD

I don't know that character, unfortunately, but I think this would be a very difficult thing to determine. We'd have to find a live-action character similar enough to him, and in a similar situation, to make a comparison...

But, you know, There are several unconventional but popular characters in anime. Just take Zaraki kenpachi (Bleach), Kuwabara (YYH), or pretty much any male character from One Piece for example.

Also, I think many fans tend to call anime characters pretty when they're just not "ugly". I mean, most shônen main characters, for example, aren't meant to be pretty, just normal. To make a generalisation, manga doesn't really allow for realism in drawing people, so IMO comparing them to real humans doesn't really work.
