That is such a stupidly silly thing to get mad about. I guess I can't identify with Bilbo because I have not run away from home with a group of hairy men to fight a dragon...yet.

I can sympathize. Magneto's very bound to a specific time and place, and it's difficult to simplify that without missing the point of his character. I can understand how that would be frustrating if you like the character and think there's value in that background.

But the person didn't say you couldn't. They just said they didn't?

I find it doubtful that so many people were calling a memeber of XMFC fandom "Like Erik because she's the mean one," and "Like Charles because she's the nice one," that these two fans had to put out a PSA.

Granted, I'm not part of the Charles/Erik fandom anymore, but who the hell would call a fellow fan "the mean one" and also reduce one half of their OTP to "the mean one"???

It looks like it's from an RP blog. Which in that case, I can see it.

imo they're just trying to explain why it feels wrong for them and give it some weight. you don't have to feel accused yourself.

Idk I don't read anything in that post that says other people can't identify with characters they don't share the backgrounds for, just that they personally don't and feel like they can't.

I don't know...I usually dislike this sort of pc-ness, but with Magneto I can sort of understand, in the sense that him being Jewish and a Holocaust survivor is sort or integral to his personality and story.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
(Not Jewish in most of comics continuity, was Roma instead, may since have been retconned because it's just easier to think Holocaust=Jewish)

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
What the fuck are you on? His name is Max Eisenhardt and he's Jewish. His wife, however, was Roma. He did go and live among them for a while but just... what the fuck is this comment.

[personal profile] thezmage 2016-02-19 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a real time of years in real life where the official story was that Magneto was not Jewish, but Roma

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
He's gone back and forth.

I haven't read all of his appearances, but I think the order goes like this: He's been some vague sort of central European, then ambiguously Jewish, then a Jewish Shoah survivor who married a Rroma woman, then Sinti, then Jewish again.

Pretty sure movie!Erik is Jewish, though.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I misspoke. Apparently Magda was Sinti, too. If I remember right, Sinti are a people of Rromani-speaking Gypsies who don't call themselves Rroma.

Aaand this is why I should probably just say "Gypsy."

IDK I get why they're mad (and that's a boring simplification of both characters). And I'll admit it gets my hackles up too when characters like that are dismissed as just trash or "mean ones".
