UGHHHHH!!! Vampire Princess Miyu... I have all the DVDs. I love this series, it was amazing and loved the two of them together.

Thank you for reminding me that I haven't watched it in forever.

I watched an episode of this. It had terrible animation and was boring as all get out. Maybe that's why Westerners didn't like it.

Did you watch the original OAVs or the series? The OAVs were gorgeous but had the same stilted art as a lot of the horror/shojo series at the time, whereas the series had often lovely art but very visible shortcuts.

It's a slow burn of a series (originally a manga) with definite moments that don't help to draw in new viewers, but it's actually very good otherwise.

-not secret maker, but was a very big fan of Larva and Miyu at the time.

I don't remember. But I do remember now that I didn't like the name Larva. That's the name of a baby bug.

It does seem weird and some translations have it as Rava. But it actually made sense in context - many of the enemy 'demons' Miyu fought (shinma) took their names from cultural conceits. Larva is also the Latin word for 'mask', which he wears, and he is entangled with a lover/friend among the shinma named Lemures, which is the Roman concept of the malignant dead.

Watch the OAV, or read the manga. The OAV was actually pretty good even if like the AYRT said, it has stilted, very 80's esque art, but the real jewel for this series is the actual manga. It dealt with vampire tropes in a way that I've never seen befre, and like the secret said it's really original.

Oh, lastly, Larva's name is...weird. It's written out as ラヴァ in the original, and it's romanized as Rava. There's some confusion as to whether or not the true English name would be "Larva" or "Lava" (or even keeping it "Rava"). You get used to the name "Larva" pretty quickly though to be honest. I thought it was weird at first too but now I barely give it a second thought.

Loved the OAV, but only read the first volume + an issue of the "New Vampire Miyu" series. If you've read both, how does that compare to the original manga run? (What I read of the "New" series felt quite slight compared to the OAV in storytelling and atmosphere, despite some attractive art...)

Honestly I would get the reading order online (I own all the English mangas + a full set of Japanese ones, but they're packed up in storage so I can't grab them right now to check for sure), I believe it's the first 1-4 mangas of "Vampire Princess Miyu" are pre-"New Vampire Miyu", then the entire series of "New Vampire Miyu", then the rest of the "Vampire Princess Miyu" mangas. The manga gets more in depth about Larva and Miyu, and explains their backstories a little better (it becomes more understandable why Larva does what he does, and chooses to stay by her side, and it's interesting to read about how their relationship came to be where it's at, from enemies to Larva being an unwilling ally to him willingly swearing his life to her, and her accepting his protection and companionship (and love I suppose, I personally think it's pretty heavily hinted that Miyu at least has feelings for Larva--at one point she stalks a young man simply because he reminds her of Larva--and Larva most likely returns them).

The series takes a little bit to get moving, but it's wonderful once it does. :)

YESSSSS. Vampire Princess Miyu is my favorite vampire series of all time (with Nightwalker: the Midnight Detective being a fairly close second). I wish more people loved it.

Oh my God, I'd forgotten about Nightwalker until you just said it. That opening is what made me fall in love with Atsushi Sakurai's voice. Mmm...

The series ending left something to be desired but overall I loved it to pieces! It's so rare I find someone else who remembers it at all.

Wow I've never seen that pic of them before! I've been meaning to watch this series for years. It's got to be streaming somewhere, but I don't mind getting the dvds as well. I'm not particularly a fan of vampires, but if the characters and stories are compelling I'm all in.

It's on Hulu if I remember right!

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
Omg, I remember. I had some of the mangas. Might still have them somewhere. Unfortunately I kinda gave up on it since it was pretty much impossible to get all of the series in my country at the time.

Unfortunately it was dropped in English before the final 5(?) volumes could get translated. The studio that had the rights, Studio Ironcat, went under. :(

Vampire Princess Miyu was the shit when I was younger, I know I read a few volumes but I could never quite get into it.

There's probably no fandom because it's old as balls...
