Do you hide your power level?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Y/N and why.

Re: Do you hide your power level?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know what that means, so probably no.

“Hide Your Power Level” is an expression taken from the Shōnen manga and anime series Dragon Ball. Online, the expression is often used to describe a user who is hiding their affiliation, skills or hobbies (like video games or anime) to avoid being labelled negatively.

Oh. Still no, not really. My "power level" is naturally low.

Re: Do you hide your power level?

Reflexively. I don't really even have a conscious justification for it. I think it's just an outgrowth of my broader anxiety issues.

(looks at my Black Butler glasses chain that I wear every day) I'm going to say no.

I don't "hide" it, but it's not a visible part of me and you wouldn't know I was a huge geek by looking at me or even knowing me. Geeky shit - games, anime, whatever - is what I do in my free time, it's a hobby for me and occasionally a few other geeky friends. That's it. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing an anime T-shirt or something, just because that's 100% not my style. And I'm not going to just bring it up to random people unless the conversation steers in that direction, so yeah.

Yeah, I don't like sticking out and they're kinda embarrassing hobbies.

My doodles are pretty anime though, so I guess that sorta counts as not.

Re: Do you hide your power level?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. I never bring it up but if someone asks me if I watch anime I'll say 'sometimes', they don't need to know that I watch anime daily and that I'm a huge anime nerd. Dealing with normalfags and people with a power level lower than mine is a pain in the ass.

If I have to list my hobbies I stick to the socially accepted ones like reading or watching tv shows.

Yes. Although this often bites me in the ass, overall I'd rather be underestimated than overestimated. It makes this wolf's sheep costume fit better.

I have a LOT of specialized knowledge, but it is very rarely of any use/on-topic in the places where I usually hang out online. F!S doesn't care about my opinions on Tennessee Williams, and I'd get banned from /r/baseball if I randomly started talking about early 19th century ladies fashions.

I'm willing to mention that I play games, but I'm generally not specific with others unless they're specific with me. If they love Halo or Civilization, I know not to get too into obscure JRPGs.

Y, because otherwise I would never be able to communicate effectively with non-academics.

Yes, but mostly just because I do not let random people get close to me.

Yes, mostly because I'm private about everything.

Yes.

Because people not my friends, or who find it quirky, would probably judge my manga collection, or number of anime I've watched in a way that would impact me in a personal or professional sense. Nobody needs to know that their boss has a top tier taste in waifu.

In my original work, I do like to downplay how nerdy I really am. I play the girly girl instead of the comic-book nerd. But my fannish past peeks through now and again.

Re: Do you hide your power level?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yes and no.

I'm fairly open about being a gamer, and much more of a gamer geek than most people. But I really hide my power level when it comes to anime and comic books.

The reason is that I run into a lot of nice well-adjusted gamers, but nearly every anime and comic nerd I've ever met irl has been some ungodly combination of horrible stereotypes.

I hide it at work. People know that I play video games and watch anime, but they don't know how far down the rabbit hole I've fallen.
